Top 10 Ways to Comfort a Loved One During Their Final Days

There are moments in life that change you forever.

For me, many of those moments have happened while sitting quietly beside someone who was nearing the end of their life.

As a Certified Death Doula and Psychic Medium, I’ve had the incredible privilege of walking alongside individuals and families during one of life’s most sacred transitions. While every person’s journey is unique, one thing remains true: people rarely remember the perfect words. They remember how they were loved.

Families often tell me they’re afraid they’ll say the wrong thing or somehow make the experience harder. The truth is, you don’t need to have all the answers. Your presence is often the greatest gift you can offer.

Here are ten ways you can lovingly support someone during their final days.

1. Be Fully Present

You don’t have to fix anything.

Simply sitting beside someone, holding space, and allowing them to feel your presence can bring tremendous comfort. Put away your phone. Slow down. Let them know they’re not alone.

2. Say What Is in Your Heart

Tell them you love them.

Thank them for what they’ve meant to your life.

Share favorite memories. If there’s something you’ve been waiting to say, this is the time.

Even if they can no longer respond, many healthcare professionals believe hearing may remain until very late in the dying process.

3. Give Them Permission

One of the most emotional moments I witness is when someone seems to be waiting.

Sometimes they’re worried about the people they’re leaving behind.

If it feels genuine, gently saying, “We’ll be okay. You can rest when you’re ready,” can bring incredible peace to both of you.

4. Create a Peaceful Environment

The environment matters.

Soft music, dim lighting, family photographs, meaningful scents, or simply reducing unnecessary noise can help create a calming space.

Small changes often make a big difference.

5. Follow Their Lead

Some people want conversation.

Others want silence.

Some want stories.

Others simply want someone nearby.

There is no right or wrong. Let them guide the experience whenever possible.

6. Never Underestimate Gentle Touch

Holding someone’s hand.

Brushing their hair.

Resting your hand on their shoulder.

Physical touch can communicate love when words are no longer needed.

Always pay attention to what feels comfortable for them.

7. Don’t Be Afraid of Silence

Silence isn’t empty.

Some of the most meaningful moments I’ve witnessed happened without anyone speaking at all.

Allow the quiet to simply exist.

8. Keep Talking

Even if your loved one appears unconscious, continue speaking with kindness and love.

Tell them who’s in the room.

Share stories.

Play their favorite songs.

Many families later tell me this became one of the most healing parts of saying goodbye.

9. Care for Yourself, Too

Caregivers often forget that they are grieving while providing care.

Eat nourishing meals.

Sleep when you can.

Accept help when it’s offered.

You cannot pour from an empty cup.

10. Remember That Love Doesn’t End

Every family experiences loss differently.

Whatever your beliefs may be, the relationship you’ve built with your loved one doesn’t simply disappear.

The love you’ve shared continues to shape your life, your memories, and who you become.

That love is part of you forever.

A Final Thought

Walking someone home is one of the greatest honors of my life.

It has taught me that death isn’t only about saying goodbye. It’s also about love, forgiveness, connection, gratitude, and being fully present for another human being.

If you’re caring for someone who is nearing the end of life, or you’re navigating anticipatory grief after receiving difficult news, I want you to know this:

You don’t have to do it perfectly.

You simply have to love them.
